Why this course exists

Tactics are not a strategy

Most organisations are not starting from nothing. They already have policies, providers, awareness days, training, benefits, employee groups and good people trying hard to do the right thing. The problem is that it often does not join up.

Workplace health has become crowded. HR may own absence. Occupational health may sit somewhere else. Health and safety may be looking at psychosocial risk. Reward and benefits may be buying services. DEI may be working on inclusion. Providers may be producing reports.

Somewhere in the middle, someone is expected to make it all work. That is where this course starts.

Many people doing this work have come into it from one professional route, and however capable, have not always been taught how the whole system fits together. That is the gap this course is designed to fill.

A strategy needs more than activity

  • A wellbeing calendar is not a strategy
  • A set of providers is not a strategy
  • A mental health campaign is not a strategy
  • A policy no one uses is not a strategy

A strategy needs a clear aim, proper foundations, defined ownership, good governance, enough resource, the right stakeholders, usable data and a realistic understanding of the organisation it is built for.

What you will learn

Six modules. One joined-up strategy.

Module 1

Foundations of a Health, Mental Health & Wellbeing Strategy

Before you build anything, you need to know what you are building.

What a strategy actually is, why definitions matter, and what “good” needs to look like (aims, behaviours, frameworks and boundaries) before more activity is added.

Module 2

Governance, Stakeholders & Board Engagement

Workplace health does not sit neatly in one department.

Ownership, sponsorship, stakeholder mapping, wellbeing working groups and Board engagement, and how to talk about health in terms of risk, value, resilience and governance.

Module 3

Implementation Basics

A strategy only matters if it changes something.

How to move from intention to action without rushing into disconnected activity: priorities, communication, ownership and the link between strategy and day-to-day life.

Module 4

Building Internal Structures

A strategy needs somewhere to live.

The structures that make workplace health stick: policies, managers, employee voice, training, mental health first aid, networks and performance management.

Module 5

Using Health Providers Effectively

Most organisations spend money on providers. Far fewer use them well.

Occupational health, EAPs, PMI, digital tools, procurement, provider reports and care pathways, and the disconnected services where money quietly leaks out.

Module 6

Data, Measurement & ROI

Everyone wants the numbers. Few organisations have joined-up data.

What you can measure, what you probably cannot, and how to build a credible picture of impact over time: provider data, absence, dashboards, ROI and value.

Why learn from Amy McKeown?

Built from 20+ years of doing the work

Amy McKeown has worked in workplace health, mental health and wellbeing for more than 20 years. She founded one of the UK’s early digital mental health companies in 2003, building evidence-based digital support for anxiety and depression long before workplace mental health became mainstream.

She later created and led EY’s UK health and mental health strategy across 13,000 people and 22 locations, and has since worked with organisations including Samsung UK, Burberry, the EU Parliament and Barloworld on workplace health, wellbeing and organisational change.

She writes for the Society of Occupational Medicine and advises senior leaders and Boards, working across the point where HR, occupational health, health & safety, reward, benefits, leadership, culture, governance and data all meet. This course is built from that experience.
